The old adage “you get what you pay for” can be wrong when purchasing a “used” as in “previously in our rental fleet” mobility scooter a.k.a. electronic convenience vehicle, ECV, electric wheelchair. Rental scooters take a beating and they don’t have odometers like cars to truly tell you how much they have been used before you buy it.  So what you may think is a fair price, even if it is an excellent price, may be the worse value for money you ever spent. The selling of mobility scooters versus the renting of them are very different businesses and most of the time, as we all know, if you stretch yourself too thin you will snap.  A good mobility scooter company should either have a good rental business or good sales business and not need to rely on both or rather get rid of their old, used, scooters through their sales side.  A sales only company can have good used scooters that were brought in on trade (yup, just like a car) whereas a rental company is just using you to get rid of their old, tired models, ready for their last breath, scooters.  If you are looking to buy, look for a company that only sells and don’t be shy!  Ask specifically if they have any related entity that rents, particularly when purchasing a used scooter.  And the reverse is also true, ask a rental company if they have a sales side.  You don’t want to rent and have the local personnel that should be focused on maintaining their rental fleet busy doing other things like selling.  Basically, too many irons in the fire won’t be good for your rental or post purchase support!
